Inspiring the Next Generation: A Day with The Neighboring Academy

This week, the C&J Catering corporate office was filled with even more energy than usual as we hosted a bright group of students from The Neighboring Academy. It was a privilege to open our doors to these high schoolers and provide a behind-the-scenes look at the fast-paced world of professional foodservice. We aimed to not only teach, but to inspire these students to pursue their goals of working in the hospitality industry in the future.

The visit began with a tour of our facilities led by Corporate General Manager Brian Collins and Executive Chef Will Shaw. Students observed our team in action across various departments, gaining a firsthand look at everything from culinary prep in the kitchen to the inner workings of our sales, bakery, and logistics divisions.

Following the tour, students joined a sit-down session with our Owner and CEO, Jamie Berger. Jamie shared the history of the organization and discussed the diverse aspects of the catering industry, including operations, logistics, and the art of service. This gave the students a valuable opportunity to ask questions and gain professional perspective on successful career paths within the culinary world.

One of the most meaningful parts of the visit was the chance to celebrate one of our own. Millie, a student at The Neighboring Academy, joined the C&J Catering team through their program and has been working with us part-time to sharpen her culinary skills. Millie has quickly become a beloved member of our crew, and seeing her in her element while her classmates visited was a special moment for everyone involved.

The afternoon ended on a high note with a high-stakes cake decorating competition. We challenged the students to step into the role of a pastry chef, giving them the tools and the freedom to express their creativity through frosting and design. We were incredibly impressed with their skills (and the mess they may have created too).
